Help Jackie and Shadow name their bald eagle chicks

Jackie and Shadow, the famous bald eagle pair, are seeking help in naming their two surviving eaglets. The pair, known for their presence on the Big Bear Bald Eagle Live Nest Cam, are inviting entries for the naming contest through the Friends of Big Bear Valley website. The contest is open until Friday, March 28 at 11:59 pm PST.

To participate in the naming contest, individuals can submit their preferred names for a fee. The cost is $5 for one name entry, $10 for three name entries, or $25 for 10 name entries. It is important to note that the names should be gender-neutral as the sex of the chicks is not yet known. Additionally, the submissions should be G-rated to ensure appropriateness.

The final list of names will be randomly selected by a computer and sent to students at local elementary schools in Big Bear Valley. Traditionally, third graders have had the honor of choosing the final names, but this year, third, fourth, and fifth graders will be involved in the selection process.

The voting for the final names will take place on April 1, with the winners being announced on FOBBV’s official social media pages. If your submitted name is chosen, you will receive a certificate of recognition.

The journey for Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets has been eventful, with one chick unfortunately not surviving. The surviving eaglets are currently referred to as Bigger Chick (BC) and the Smaller Chick (SC). The chick that passed away has been named Misty in honor of Kathi Misterly, an FOBBV volunteer who recently passed away.

In past years, Jackie and Shadow’s chicks have been given meaningful names like Spirit.
