Husband of NJ mayor charged with DUI while toddler was in her car wants public to ‘leave her alone’

The mayor of Lumberton Township, Gina LaPlaca, found herself in hot water last month when she was charged with driving under the influence while her toddler was in the car. Her husband, Jason Carty, came to her defense, stating that she should be given some leniency because Lumberton is a small town with only 13,000 residents.
The incident occurred on St. Patrick’s Day when LaPlaca was caught on video swerving all over the road and almost hitting a utility pole after picking up her 2-year-old son from daycare. Police arrived at her house and found her child strapped in a car seat in the back seat. She was then subjected to field sobriety tests, where she appeared unsteady on her feet.
During the investigation, officers discovered a water bottle filled with alcohol and a small liquor bottle in LaPlaca’s car. As a result, she was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and endangering the welfare of a child. Despite the charges, LaPlaca has refused to resign from her position as mayor of Lumberton.
LaPlaca’s husband revealed that she is currently receiving treatment at an inpatient facility and is on the road to recovery. However, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy called on her to temporarily step down from her mayoral duties. The community of Lumberton has been divided, with some residents demanding her resignation while others show support for her.
This incident was not the first time LaPlaca made headlines for her behavior. A video surfaced online showing her being escorted out of a meeting by police after calling another woman a derogatory term. The altercation was sparked by criticism of her husband’s appointment as captain of the Ewing Township Fire Department.
Despite the controversies surrounding her, LaPlaca has held various positions, including business administrator in Neptune Township. However, her future in politics remains uncertain as the fallout from her recent arrest continues to unfold. Residents of Lumberton are demanding accountability and transparency from their mayor, who they elected to represent their best interests.
