Illegal immigrant breaks ICE officer’s nose during New Jersey deportation arrest – faces 20 years behind bars

An illegal immigrant from Colombia is facing federal charges for assaulting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in New Jersey. Hector Villegas-Alvarez, 27, allegedly used his elbow to smash the officer in the face, breaking her nose and causing a concussion. He has been charged with assaulting a federal officer and could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
The incident took place in Roselle, N.J., on February 23, when ICE officers stopped Villegas-Alvarez, who was identified as an individual without legal immigration status and due for deportation. When authorities attempted to detain him, Villegas-Alvarez resisted arrest and elbowed a female ICE officer in the face. The officer sustained a broken nose and a concussion, leading to severe post-concussion symptoms such as fainting and difficulty breathing.
During the violent struggle, ICE officers tased Villegas-Alvarez three times in the back. Despite being momentarily incapacitated, he tried to return to his vehicle before ultimately being subdued by the officers.
Villegas-Alvarez’s arraignment is set for Tuesday morning, where he will face the charges against him. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges faced by law enforcement officers, especially those tasked with enforcing immigration laws. The US Attorney’s Office has emphasized its commitment to protecting law enforcement officers and ensuring that those who assault them face swift and severe punishment.
