In Sam Darnold, Seahawks got a younger, cheaper QB. It won’t matter unless they support him

The Seattle Seahawks made a significant move in securing their quarterback of the future by signing Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract with $55 million guaranteed. This deal, although not the highest among veteran starting quarterbacks in terms of average annual salary, is a bargain compared to what other quarterbacks in the league are making. The Seahawks are banking on the potential of Darnold, who has shown flashes of brilliance in his career, especially during the 2024 season where he had the sixth-highest touchdown rate in the league.

To ensure the success of Darnold in Seattle, the team needs to provide him with the necessary support, starting with the offensive line. The Seahawks have made moves to bolster their offensive line by signing former Ravens offensive lineman Josh Jones to a one-year deal worth up to $4.75 million. Jones, who has experience playing both guard and tackle positions, will provide depth and versatility to the line.

Despite this signing, Seattle should continue to actively search for more options on the offensive line, especially at the center position. The Bears’ recent signing of Drew Dalman to a three-year, $42 million contract highlights the high price teams are willing to pay for quality linemen. The Seahawks, who have been cautious in making big commitments in free agency, could benefit from upgrading their front line to protect Darnold and improve their offensive performance.

With several top-ranked guards and centers still available in free agency, the Seahawks have the opportunity to further strengthen their offensive line. Players like Will Fries, Mekhi Becton, and Brandon Scherff could be potential targets for Seattle as they look to solidify their blocking unit.

The structure of Darnold’s contract will determine how much cap space the Seahawks have left to make additional moves in free agency. While the team has made some signings on defense, including linebacker Ernest Jones IV and defensive tackle Jarran Reed, the focus remains on providing Darnold with the support he needs to succeed in Seattle. As the offseason progresses, Seattle will continue to address its needs and build a competitive team around their new quarterback. The Seattle Seahawks have made some moves in free agency, but there is still plenty of cap room to add impact players on the offensive line. With the recent signing of guard Banks to a lucrative deal, it’s clear that the market for offensive linemen is competitive. However, the Seahawks have their eyes on Fries, who is coming off a broken leg but is still poised for a major payday. Unfortunately, Fries ultimately agreed to a deal with the Minnesota Vikings, leaving Seattle to explore other options.

Veteran guards Scherff and Zeitler could be solid backup plans, but at 33 and 35 years old respectively, they would only provide a temporary solution. The priority for the Seahawks should be shoring up the offensive line to protect quarterback Darnold and improve the run game. This will allow Darnold to perform at his best without constantly dodging pass rushers like he did in the wild-card loss to the Rams.

In addition to addressing the offensive line, Seattle also needs to be active in the wide receiver market. Players like Robinson, Valdes-Scantling, and potentially Kupp (if released by the Rams) could provide a boost to the receiving corps. With former Rams assistant coach Peetz on staff as the passing game coordinator, Kupp could be an intriguing option for the Seahawks.

A potential addition at fullback has also emerged, as the 49ers are expected to release veteran Juszczyk. Adding a versatile player like Juszczyk could enhance the Seahawks’ offensive versatility and provide another weapon for Darnold.

Ultimately, Day 2 of free agency should be focused on solidifying the offensive line and ensuring that Darnold has the support he needs to succeed. While the Seahawks made the decision to move on from Smith in favor of Darnold for youth and cap savings, it’s crucial that they reallocate those funds to bolster the position group responsible for protecting the quarterback.

By making strategic moves in free agency, the Seahawks can set themselves up for success in the upcoming season and give Darnold the tools he needs to thrive.
