Instagram Tightens Privacy for Teens: Restricted DMs and New ‘Sleep Mode’ Feature
Instagram is rolling out new privacy measures for all users under 18, aiming to create a safer and more controlled online environment for teens. These changes will apply to both new and existing accounts, automatically placing young users in more restrictive settings.
One of the most notable changes is the restriction of direct messages (DMs). Teen accounts will now have limited access to messaging with adults who don’t follow them. This measure is designed to protect younger users from unwanted interactions or potential online predators. If an adult tries to message a teen who isn’t following them, Instagram will block the interaction, enhancing security for young users.
In addition to restricted DMs, Instagram is introducing a ‘Sleep Mode’ feature. This tool will allow teens to control when notifications are turned off, encouraging healthy screen time habits. Sleep Mode aims to promote digital well-being by helping teens take breaks from the platform, particularly during late-night hours when overuse can interfere with sleep and productivity.
Instagram’s new privacy push also includes stronger content control measures. Accounts for users under 18 will have more limited visibility, preventing their content from being pushed to non-followers through Explore or Reels. This change is intended to help teens maintain a more private digital footprint, reducing exposure to potentially harmful or inappropriate content.
These updates reflect Instagram’s broader effort to enhance online safety for younger users in response to growing concerns about social media’s impact on teen mental health. As privacy standards evolve, Instagram is taking proactive steps to ensure a safer, more mindful environment for its youngest users.
