Islanders winger Pierre Engvall seemingly escapes catastrophic injury

The New York Islanders had a scare during their recent game against the Philadelphia Flyers when Pierre Engvall appeared to suffer a serious knee injury. However, it turned out to be a false alarm as Engvall returned to the bench for overtime and was in the dressing room after the game. This was a relief for the Islanders, as Engvall has been one of their better players recently, especially since being put on a line with Casey Cizikas and Hudson Fasching.
Engvall’s future with the Islanders is still uncertain, as he has been in and out of the lineup this season. With just three games left in the season and the team officially eliminated from playoff contention, Engvall still has something to prove. The Islanders will need to decide whether to buy out the winger, who has five years left on his contract at $3 million per year.
If the Islanders choose to buy out Engvall, they would incur a $1 million cap hit from next season through 2034-35, but it would create $2 million in savings for the first five of those seasons. Engvall has contributed 15 points in 58 games this season, with eight goals and seven assists.
In other news, goaltender Marcus Högberg bounced back from a tough performance against the Rangers with a solid showing against the Flyers. He stopped 19 of 22 shots in regulation and overtime, and four of five in the shootout. Despite his efforts, the Islanders couldn’t secure the win in overtime.
Coach Patrick Roy chose not to reflect on the season after the Islanders were eliminated from playoff contention, opting to do so after the season concludes. The Islanders will now look to finish the season strong and assess their roster for the future.
