James Gandolfini Almost Lost Role, Not ‘Threatening’

How James Gandolfini Almost Missed Out on ‘The Sopranos’ Role
It’s hard to imagine anyone else but James Gandolfini playing the iconic role of Tony Soprano in the groundbreaking series “The Sopranos.” However, series creator David Chase initially had doubts about casting Gandolfini in the role, fearing he wasn’t “threatening enough.”
In an excerpt from Jason Bailey’s book “Gandolfini: Jim, Tony, and the Life of a Legend” (via Vulture), it was revealed that Gandolfini’s manager, Nancy Sanders, was the one who believed Gandolfini was perfect for the role. Despite Chase’s initial concerns, Sanders assured him that Gandolfini was indeed the right choice.
After reviewing Gandolfini’s reel, Chase expressed his one concern to Sanders, questioning whether Gandolfini was “threatening enough.” However, Sanders stood by her client, emphasizing that Gandolfini had the necessary qualities to portray Tony Soprano convincingly.
Casting directors Sheila Jaffe and Georgianne Walken also supported Gandolfini for the role, stating that he was their favorite choice from the beginning. Despite Gandolfini’s own doubts about landing the role, he ultimately impressed Chase during a reading, solidifying his place as Tony Soprano.
Gandolfini admitted that he initially believed he wouldn’t be cast due to his appearance, thinking they would go for a “pretty boy” instead. He also had concerns about working with Chase but was pleasantly surprised after their meeting.
“When he finally settled down and really did a reading, it was just obvious,” Chase said of Gandolfini’s audition.
“The Sopranos” went on to become a critically acclaimed series, with Gandolfini’s portrayal of Tony Soprano earning him widespread praise. The show is now available for streaming on Max, allowing fans to revisit this iconic performance.
