Jeep Recalls 194,000 Plug-in Hybrid SUVs Due to Fire Hazard

Jeep has announced a major recall of 194,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs, specifically targeting the 2021-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe models. The recall is in response to a serious fire risk associated with an internal transmission wiring connector. According to Jeep, this connector has the potential to short-circuit, posing a risk of fire whether the vehicle is parked or in motion.

Owners of these vehicles are being urged to take immediate precautions. Jeep advises them to park their SUVs outdoors and away from structures until repairs are made. The company has stated that the issue could cause a sudden fire even when the vehicle is not in use, heightening the concern for drivers.

Although no injuries or fatalities have been reported, Jeep has confirmed several incidents of fires related to this issue. The automaker is working closely with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to address the problem. Jeep dealerships will begin notifying affected owners soon and will provide free repairs to fix the wiring problem. The fix involves inspecting and possibly replacing the internal transmission wiring connector to ensure the vehicle is safe to operate.

Jeep’s recall serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing safety concerns quickly in modern electric and hybrid vehicles. This issue follows several other recalls in the auto industry related to fire risks in electric components, underscoring the complexities of integrating new technologies.

For more information, owners can contact Jeep’s customer service or visit the NHTSA website to verify if their vehicle is included in the recall.
