John Amos, Star of ‘Good Times’ and ‘Roots,’ and ‘Coming To America’, Passes Away at 84
Veteran actor John Amos, best known for his iconic roles in Good Times and Roots, has passed away at the age of 84. His career spanned several decades, and his work left an indelible mark on television history, particularly for his portrayal of strong, Black father figures that resonated with audiences across generations.
Amos gained widespread fame in the 1970s as James Evans Sr., the patriarch on the groundbreaking sitcom Good Times, which focused on a Black family living in Chicago. His role as the tough but loving father was lauded for breaking stereotypes and bringing depth to the portrayal of African American families on television.
In 1977, Amos starred in Roots, the landmark miniseries that traced the history of an African American family from slavery to freedom. His portrayal of Kunta Kinte’s adult descendant, Toby, earned him critical acclaim and cemented his place in television history.
Throughout his career, Amos continued to act in various film and television roles, always bringing authenticity and strength to his characters.
