Jon Stewart On the Deporation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia

Jon Stewart Slams President Trump for Deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
On a recent episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart took a more serious tone as he criticized President Donald Trump for the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Stewart began by outlining the story of Garcia, an undocumented migrant from El Salvador who was deported to his home country and detained in a “mega-prison” due to an administrative error. Stewart sarcastically suggested that Garcia could hitch a ride back to the U.S. with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, who was visiting the White House.
Stewart joked, “You don’t even have to give Garcia the middle seat. I’m sure Garcia would just grab the wing and Tom Cruise it over here if he had to. But sadly, Bukele arrived at the White House with just the Miami club promoter clothes on his back and a pocket full of excuses.”
At the meeting between Bukele and Trump, Bukele was asked about returning Garcia to the U.S. and replied with a dismissive comment about smuggling a terrorist. Stewart criticized the lack of concern shown by both leaders for Garcia’s situation.
Stewart expressed his frustration, saying, “Our president, their president, [they’re like], ‘I can’t do it. I guess we’ll just have to let him rot in fucking prison, even though he didn’t deserve to be there.’” He emphasized that someone cared about Garcia, despite Trump and Bukele’s indifference.
Stewart highlighted Trump’s lack of concern for Garcia by pointing out the president’s focus on deflecting questions from journalists rather than addressing the deportation issue.
A journalist asked Trump about abiding by Supreme Court decisions regarding deportation, to which Trump responded defensively. Stewart criticized Trump’s prioritization of keeping criminals out of the country over addressing the unjust deportation of individuals like Garcia.
Stewart also raised concerns about Trump’s willingness to deport U.S. citizens if they were deemed “really bad people.” He expressed disbelief at the speed with which Trump was becoming authoritarian in his approach to immigration issues.
