Jordan Chiles’ Bronze Medal Reversed: Ana Barbosu to Receive Honor in Bucharest Ceremony

The controversy surrounding Jordan Chiles’ Olympic bronze medal in the women’s floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Games has been a rollercoaster. Initially, Chiles was awarded the bronze after her coach, Cecile Landi, successfully challenged her score. This bumped Chiles from fifth to third place, pushing Romania’s Ana Barbosu out of the podium.

However, the Romanian Olympic Committee disputed the timing of the inquiry, arguing that Landi’s challenge was submitted past the allowed one-minute deadline. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) later ruled in favor of Romania, revoking Chiles’ bronze medal and awarding it to Barbosu.

This decision sparked significant controversy, with USA Gymnastics submitting new video evidence showing that the inquiry was made within the allowed time. Despite this, CAS maintained its decision, leaving Chiles without the medal.

Barbosu is set to receive her bronze medal at a formal ceremony in Bucharest on August 16, 2024. Despite the tension, Barbosu expressed her sympathy for Chiles and hoped that they would share the podium in future competitions.
