Jordan Chiles Stripped of Olympic Bronze in Floor Exercise Over Timing Dispute
U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles has been ordered to return her bronze medal in the floor exercise following a ruling by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Sunday. The decision upholds findings that a coach’s appeal, which had initially secured her spot on the podium, was submitted four seconds after the deadline.
The controversy centers around the timing of the appeal made by USA Gymnastics head coach Cecile Landi. According to the IOC, the appeal was filed 64 seconds after the event, exceeding the one-minute window allowed. However, USA Gymnastics has disputed this claim, asserting that Landi submitted the inquiry within 47 seconds. The organization has provided time-stamped video evidence to support their case and continues to challenge the IOC’s decision.
As a result of the ruling, Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu has been awarded the bronze medal in the floor exercise, while Chiles faces the disappointment of losing her hard-earned place on the podium.
