Kamala Harris sets a deadline for her next move

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is currently weighing the possibility of running for governor of California, with a self-imposed deadline to make a decision by the end of the summer. This decision, if made, would likely impact her chances of running for president in 2028.

Harris, who has been leading in early national polls, has been in discussions with advisers and confidants about the challenges of a potential presidential primary. She has expressed interest in becoming the first Black woman to serve as governor of California, as well as overseeing the fifth-largest economy in the world.

Recent public appearances by Harris suggest that she is positioning herself as a Democratic Party leader, whether on the East or West coast. She recently accepted the Chairman’s prize at the NAACP Image Awards and is scheduled to appear in Las Vegas for a discussion on artificial intelligence. Harris has also retained key aides under her organization Pioneer49, indicating her commitment to staying involved in the political arena.

While Harris has not officially announced a run for governor, her potential candidacy has already influenced the California Democratic field. Several candidates have expressed willingness to step aside if Harris decides to run, including State Attorney General Rob Bonta and former Rep. Katie Porter. Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, a close ally of Harris, is also prepared to support her in another statewide race if she chooses to run.

Overall, Harris’s potential entry into the governor’s race has the potential to reshape the Democratic primary field in California. While some candidates may choose to stay in the race, Harris’s strong name recognition and campaign abilities could ultimately lead to her clearing the field and securing the Democratic nomination.
