Kamala Harris Surpasses Biden in Latest Approval Ratings
A recent Monmouth University poll has revealed a notable shift in public opinion, with Vice President Kamala Harris edging past President Joe Biden in approval ratings.
Harris Takes the Lead
As of December 18, the survey showed that Harris led with an approval rating of 35%, slightly ahead of Biden, who reached a new low of 34%. This marginal lead, although not substantial, indicates a shift in public sentiment. Independent voters particularly showed a decline in support for Biden, with his approval rating falling to 24%, a significant drop of nearly 15 points since July 2023. The primary factors contributing to this dip are issues related to immigration, inflation, and unfulfilled campaign promises of a “better life” under Biden’s economic strategies.
Analysis by Monmouth University
Patrick Murray of the Monmouth University Polling Institute pointed out that the data reflects the impact of persisting high prices post-COVID. Despite the Biden administration’s focus on infrastructure investments and positive economic indicators, the general public sentiment remains affected by the ongoing economic challenges, particularly inflation. Murray highlighted the political risks of an administration perceived as being out of touch with the public’s actual experiences.
The Response from Harris and Biden
Despite these numbers, both Harris and Biden appear undeterred in their political aspirations. Harris has been actively defending Biden against critiques, such as those from former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy regarding Biden’s negotiating skills. Biden himself has downplayed the significance of polls, emphasizing his confidence in his administration’s performance and public support in certain states over others.
This polling data offers an intriguing snapshot of current political dynamics within the U.S. administration, reflecting fluctuating public opinions in a continually evolving political landscape.
