Mask-wearing thief who allegedly stole Kristi Noem’s Gucci bag containing $3K in cash, passport arrested: sources

An incident involving the theft of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s Gucci bag by an illegal immigrant has sparked outrage and concern. The thief, who was arrested by DC Metro Police and the Secret Service, was found to be part of a larger robbery crew. Authorities are currently on the lookout for a second suspect, also believed to be an illegal migrant.
The theft occurred while Noem was dining with her family at a restaurant in Washington, DC. The stolen bag contained $3,000 in cash, Noem’s driver’s license, passport, DHS badge, and apartment keys. The luxury Gucci bag, which retails for $4,400, also held a Louis Vuitton purse valued at $600.
Surveillance footage captured the thief, wearing a surgical mask and dark clothing, carefully observing the restaurant before making his move. He swiftly grabbed Noem’s bag, covered it with his jacket, and made a quick exit. Noem described the theft as a professional operation, highlighting the prevalence of such incidents in communities.
Despite speculation about a possible targeting due to her high-profile position, authorities believe the theft was opportunistic rather than a deliberate attack on Noem. US Attorney Ed Martin emphasized that the thief will face deportation and prosecution, in line with President Trump’s directives on handling illegal immigrants involved in criminal activities.
Noem, who oversees key security agencies, expressed shock at the incident and emphasized the importance of addressing such security threats. The involvement of ICE in the case ensures that the suspects will not be allowed to re-enter the country once deported.
The Secret Service, responsible for Noem’s security detail, is investigating the incident to prevent future occurrences. Noem’s experience serves as a reminder of the risks faced by individuals in vulnerable situations and underscores the need for vigilance and security measures in place.
