Venezuelan Migrant Charged with Armed Robbery in Streeterville

A 25-year-old Venezuelan migrant, Edmonds Peraza Cortez, is facing armed robbery charges after allegedly robbing a woman at gunpoint in Streeterville. This incident occurred just three days after Cortez was released from electronic monitoring in a different case.

Judge Deidre Dyer has ordered Cortez to be detained as a safety risk while he awaits trial for armed robbery. The victim, a 41-year-old woman, reported that Cortez pulled a gun on her outside her building on East Illinois, demanding money and subsequently stealing her iPhone, Lululemon bag, and electric scooter.

Police were able to track the victim’s phone to the 600 block of West Hubbard, where Cortez was apprehended after attempting to hide in a nearby tent upon seeing the officers. The victim positively identified him as the perpetrator of the robbery, which was captured on video.

Cortez has a history of criminal cases, with five others in the past year alone. He was recently taken off electronic monitoring on April 8 after a narcotics case against him was dropped. Prosecutors have also dismissed other charges he has faced, including reckless conduct, possessing a replica firearm, two retail thefts, and another narcotics charge.
