‘Minecraft’ Director Speaks Out Against Cops Being Called to Screenings

Director Jared Hess Responds to Rowdy Screenings of “A Minecraft Movie”

After the release of “A Minecraft Movie,” director Jared Hess has found himself addressing the rowdy behavior exhibited by young moviegoers during screenings of the blockbuster sensation. The film has sparked a viral trend where audiences scream and throw popcorn during key moments of the movie, such as Jack Black’s iconic line “I am Steve” and the exclamation of “chicken jockey!” These disruptive actions have prompted movie theaters to take action, including issuing warnings against unruly behavior and, in some cases, involving law enforcement.

Reflecting on the chaotic screenings, Hess shared his amusement with Entertainment Weekly, stating, “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called. It’s funny because I think it’s just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn. Yeah, it’s hilarious. I’ve seen so many funny videos. It’s great, especially when people are climbing on their friends’ shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments. It’s like this crazy anticipation. But, man, I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.”

Expressing his joy at the communal experience of watching movies in theaters, Hess added, “I’m just so happy that people are finding joy in going back to cinemas and seeing things as a community, as a group of people. It’s like we’ve become so isolated on our devices, and it’s just fun to experience things as a group of human beings. I think people are starved for that experience. So it’s fun that they’ve found it in this goofy movie that we’ve made.”

“A Minecraft Movie” made headlines by setting a box office record with a global opening of $313 million, making it the highest debut for a video game movie to date. Featuring a star-studded cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen, the film is based on the popular video game from Mojang Studios.

With the rise of rowdy screenings, theaters like Cineworld and REEL cinema have issued warnings to patrons regarding disruptive behavior. Cineworld stated, “Any form of anti-social behavior, especially anything that may disturb other guests such as loud screaming, clapping, and shouting will not be tolerated. Anyone acting in this manner will be removed from the screening without a refund.” Similarly, REEL cinema emphasized that disruptive behavior, including taking part in TikTok trends, will result in removal from the premises or police intervention if necessary.

“A Minecraft Movie” continues to captivate audiences worldwide and is currently showing in theaters under Warner Bros. Don’t miss out on this unique cinematic experience!
