Netflix Sets ‘Scandals,’ Korean Take on ‘Dangerous Liaisons’

Netflix has officially announced the production of a new Korean series titled “Scandals” (working title), which is set to be a historical drama taking place during the Joseon dynasty.
Featuring a star-studded cast, the series includes Son Ye-jin from “Crash Landing on You,” Ji Chang-wook from “Welcome to Samdal-ri,” and Nana from “Mask Girl.” The storyline revolves around themes of love, power, and societal expectations.
Inspired by the 2003 Korean film “Untold Scandal,” which adapted the French novel “Dangerous Liaisons” by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos to a Joseon-era backdrop, “Scandals” follows the characters Lady Cho (played by Son Ye-jin) and Cho Won (portrayed by Ji Chang-wook) as they engage in a strategic wager that challenges the norms of love and relationships. Nana’s character, Hui-yeon, adds an unexpected twist to their plans.
Son Ye-jin’s Lady Cho navigates the constraints placed on women during her time, initiating a romantic bet with the charismatic playboy Cho Won, played by Ji Chang-wook. Nana’s Hui-yeon, a widow committed to remaining chaste, finds herself questioning her beliefs after crossing paths with Cho Won.
The series will be helmed by director Jung Ji-woo, known for his work on Netflix’s “Somebody” and the film “Tune in for Love.”
“Scandals” is set in an era where personal desires were often suppressed, presenting a narrative of individuals who confront these restrictions through their decisions and behaviors. While details regarding the production schedule and release date are yet to be disclosed, the series promises to deliver a compelling story.
The novel “Dangerous Liaisons” by de Laclos, originally published in 1782, has served as inspiration for numerous adaptations exploring themes of seduction, betrayal, and manipulation. Notable film adaptations include Stephen Frears’ “Dangerous Liaisons” (1988) and Milos Forman’s “Valmont” (1989), along with modern interpretations like the teen drama “Cruel Intentions” (1999).
In a more recent development, Starz introduced a prequel series titled “Dangerous Liaisons” in 2022, delving into the origins of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont in pre-revolutionary Paris. Despite its attempt to provide fresh insights into the iconic characters, the series was discontinued after its first season.
