New Jersey wrestling star father Anthony Knox Sr. charged with simple assault for role in high school tournament brawl

The recent incident at the NJ District 25 Wrestling Tournament involving the father and son duo, Anthony Knox Sr. and Anthony Knox Jr., has sparked controversy and legal ramifications. The brawl that took place during the championship event at Collingswood High School on Feb. 22 led to both individuals being charged for their actions.

Anthony Knox Sr. was charged with simple assault and purposely/knowingly causing bodily injury for allegedly stomping and kicking a spectator at the tournament. A viral video captured the father running into the opposing high school’s fan section and instigating a physical altercation with several men. The situation escalated, involving other spectators and even his own son, who was competing in the tournament. Knox Sr., a trained mixed martial artist, was accused of attempting to kick and stomp on a spectator who was lying on the ground.

Witnesses reported seeing Knox Sr. being led out of the gym in handcuffs by the police. In the midst of the chaos, his son, Anthony Knox Jr., rushed into the bleachers to defend his father. Unfortunately, Knox Jr.’s involvement jeopardized his chance to compete in the championship, as he was seen punching a minor repeatedly in the face and head during the brawl.

Despite the suspension filed by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, a Mercer County Superior Court judge lifted the suspension, allowing Knox Jr. to compete and ultimately win his fourth title in the 126-pound division. Knox Jr. made history by becoming only the fifth person to achieve four state championships in New Jersey state history.

Both Knox Sr. and Knox Jr. are facing charges of simple assault for their roles in the altercation. This incident is not the first time Knox Sr. has had run-ins with the law, as he has been arrested multiple times in the past for DUI and disorderly conduct.

The father and son are scheduled to appear in court in Collingswood on Apr. 2 to address the charges brought against them. This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and good behavior at athletic events, especially when family members are involved.
