New Sutton Tools factory offically opened

By Shelley Topp

After a devastating fire, Sutton Tools New Zealand has emerged as one of the most modern and sophisticated small drill manufacturing plants globally in Canterbury.

The company will officially inaugurate its new factory today (Thursday, March 20) on Todds Rd, Southbrook, replacing the former Kaiapoi factory that was irreparably damaged in a fire in January 2022.

General manager Kevin Donovan emphasized that the new site provides opportunities for diversification and further development, ensuring a safe and modern workspace for the team.

The state-of-the-art facility is equipped with high-tech machinery, positioning the company ahead of its competitors and future-proofing its operations. The $40 million investment in Rangiora demonstrates confidence in the region as a business hub, with most employees hailing from Waimakariri.

Despite a sentimental attachment to Kaiapoi, Donovan explained that the new location in Rangiora better suited the company’s needs, offering a central position in a growing industrial area.

The project, completed in about a year, saw the team transitioning to the new building four months ago. The company’s focus on innovation and skill allowed for cost-effective project completion, with the team designing and building much of the equipment internally.

The new factory is set to introduce new products, innovations, and services, with plans to increase staff numbers gradually. The incorporation of new technology and machinery will streamline processes, bringing back roles previously hindered by temporary buildings.

While the company’s primary markets are in Australia and New Zealand, its global footprint extends to the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, India, the United States, and Southeast Asia.
