No jersey swap between Packers and Lions after 18 week loss
The Packers’ defeat in Week 18 eliminated them from playoff contention and brought up questions about Aaron Rodgers’ future.
Will Rodgers retire after the 2022 season? The question is reasonable because the 39-year-old quarterback has hinted at retirement before. He looked particularly emotional as he walked off the field after the defeat.
In his post game news conference, Rodgers was unsurprisingly mum about his status. One move he made after the game had fans speculating he could be quitting.
After the game, Lions rookie receiver Jameson Williams asked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers if he could have his jersey in a classic swap between opponents. He politely declined Rodgers’ request.
“I gotta hold on to this one,” Rodgers said to Williams, as captured by the NBC broadcast.
Many wondered if Rodgers wanted to keep his jersey because it was the one he wore during his final game.
Rodgers explained to reporters that the meaning wasn’t deep.
Rodgers said that he probably will have to send a jersey to Williams, after he thinks that he might have told him that he would give him one when they played in Detroit. “
There are some special ones that I like to keep. It wasn’t anything personal against Jameson. I’ll make sure I send him a copy, but I kind of want to keep this original.
Rodgers wanted to keep this jersey specifically for an unknown reason.
“It’s [a] night game [at] Lambeau, Week 18,” Rodgers said. “There are just certain jerseys you like holding onto, like when you play Chicago or a big Sunday night game. So it’s just a little bit different, I guess.”
Rodgers also clarified that he wasn’t necessarily going to keep the jersey for himself. He said that it would be “a cool one to give to somebody you really care about.”
Rodgers’ explanation certainly makes sense. Even still, it doesn’t rule out the possibility that he wants to keep the jersey because it is from his final NFL game.
In truth, he may be keeping it just in case he does decide to retire. He is expected to take time to make a decision this offseason, so the Packers’ quarterback depth chart will remain in limbo until he makes his choice.
Retirement appears to be on the table for Rodgers regardless of whether this non-jersey swap means anything.
