‘No one is above the law’: AG Bondi blasts judges accused of helping undocumented immigrants evade arrest

The recent arrests of a current judge, Hannah Dugan, and a former judge, Joel Cano, have sent shockwaves through the legal community. Both judges are accused of aiding undocumented immigrants with criminal backgrounds, sparking controversy and concern among Democrats and other observers.

Judge Dugan, a Milwaukee County Circuit Judge, was arrested by the FBI for allegedly helping an undocumented immigrant evade arrest. The immigrant, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, was facing charges of battery/domestic abuse but managed to escape arrest with Dugan’s assistance. The FBI Director, Kash Patel, confirmed Dugan’s arrest and highlighted the obstruction of justice charges she is facing.

According to court records, Flores-Ruiz had a history of violent behavior, including assaulting his roommate and a woman. Despite being in the courthouse for a hearing, Dugan allegedly directed him and his attorney to leave through a nonpublic area, allowing him to evade arrest by ICE officers.

On the other hand, former New Mexico Judge Joel Cano and his wife Nancy Cano were arrested for allegedly housing a Venezuelan national with ties to a violent gang. Cano admitted to destroying evidence, a cell phone belonging to the gang member, in an attempt to protect him. Both Cano and his wife are facing charges related to tampering with evidence.

These arrests have raised concerns about the government’s tactics in dealing with undocumented immigrants. Attorney General Pam Bondi defended the arrests, emphasizing that no one, not even judges, is above the law. Despite criticism from some officials, Bondi reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring public safety by holding individuals accountable for their actions.

As the cases unfold in court, the implications of these arrests on the judiciary and immigration policies remain to be seen. The controversy surrounding the arrests serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges associated with immigration enforcement and the rule of law.
