NYC subway victim ‘angry’ to be stat in soaring crime

A horrifying incident on the subway left a Brooklyn man, Earlton Massenburg Jr., with a deep gash on his face after being randomly attacked by a stranger. The 31-year-old Amazon deliveryman was on his way to work on a 4 train when he was suddenly awoken by excruciating pain. He recounted the moment he opened his eyes to see his attacker fleeing the scene at the Crown Heights-Utica Avenue station, leaving him with a bloody wound across his cheek.
Despite the increased presence of cameras and police in the subway system, Massenburg was shocked by the brazen attack. He described the weapon used as a sharp object, possibly a razor, causing a severe laceration from his hairline to his lip. The extent of his injuries required numerous stitches, covering his entire cheek in a horizontal line.
Unfortunately, Massenburg’s case is not isolated, as subway assaults have been on the rise in recent years. Felony assaults in transit have increased by 8% compared to 2023 and a staggering 56% compared to 2019. Misdemeanor assaults, which include less severe injuries like punches and kicks, have also seen a 7% increase. The subway system has witnessed several violent incidents, including slashings, beatings, and robberies, prompting a heightened police presence and quality-of-life patrols to address the issue.
In response to the surge in subway crimes, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch has implemented measures to enhance safety in the transit system. Quality-of-life patrols have been deployed in Queens, with plans to expand citywide, resulting in a 27% decrease in overall crime in the subways this year. Despite these efforts, Massenburg’s attacker remains at large, adding to the fear and uncertainty faced by commuters.
Despite the traumatic experience, Massenburg has shown resilience by returning to work the next day and continuing his daily commute. While still grappling with anger over the senseless attack, he remains focused on moving forward and dealing with the challenges ahead. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in the subway, urging authorities to take decisive action to ensure the safety of passengers.
