A grand jury has declined to file charges against Ohio police officers in the 2022 shooting death of Jayland Walker. Reports initially suggested that Walker was unarmed when he was killed. However, officers claimed that he fired a gun from his vehicle during a chase, and a firearm was later found in his car after the shooting. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said that the grand jury concluded the officers were legally justified in their use of force. Eight police officers fired a total of 94 shots at Walker within just 6.7 seconds, hitting him 46 times. Despite being handcuffed after the shooting, a move that a family attorney named Bobby DiCello called “adding insult to a terrible loss,” the grand jury’s decision not to indict the officers disappointed the family. They plan to file a civil suit before the one-year anniversary of Walker’s death. Walker’s death prompted an investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which sparked widespread protests over racial injustice and police use of force.
