OpenAI in Talks to Acquire AI-Assisted Coding Tool Windsurf for $3 Billion
According to Bloomberg News, OpenAI is currently in discussions to purchase the artificial intelligence-assisted coding tool Windsurf for approximately $3 billion. The deal, if finalized, would be OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date. However, the terms of the deal have not yet been confirmed, and the discussions are still ongoing, leaving room for potential changes or a breakdown of the deal.
OpenAI has chosen not to comment on the matter, while Windsurf, previously known as Codeium, has not responded to requests for comment from Reuters.
Reports suggest that Windsurf has been in discussions with investors like Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst to secure funding at a valuation of $3 billion. Last year, the company closed a $150 million funding round led by General Catalyst, which valued Windsurf at $1.25 billion.
Investor interest in the AI sector has been on the rise, fueled by the increasing use of chatbots and the development of advanced AI technologies. In March, the maker of ChatGPT announced plans to raise up to $40 billion in a new funding round, valuing the company at $300 billion.
Last year, Microsoft-backed OpenAI acquired the search and database analytics startup Rockset in a significant stock deal worth nine figures. This acquisition was aimed at enhancing the infrastructure for OpenAI’s enterprise products.
