PA mom accused of stealing $150K from youth softball league to pay for Sephora, concerts, other splurges

A Pennsylvania cop’s wife has been accused of embezzling nearly $150,000 from a youth sports program and using the money for personal expenses, including concerts and shopping sprees. Carla O’Brien, 48, was arrested for stealing the funds from the Fox Chapel Area Baseball Softball Association while serving as the league’s treasurer over a five-year period from 2019 to 2024.
O’Brien, who is married to a Pittsburgh police lieutenant, allegedly used the stolen money for various purchases at retailers like Sephora, Amazon, Kohls, Nike, and more. She also made payments to restaurants, pharmacies, concert venues, liquor stores, and pet supply shops. Additionally, O’Brien used the funds to pay off credit card debt.
The theft was uncovered when O’Brien was replaced as treasurer last July and the new treasurer discovered discrepancies in the financial accounts. Prosecutors stated that O’Brien confessed to the theft, claiming that financial difficulties after a car accident led her to steal the money.
O’Brien has been charged with theft by unlawful taking, misapplication of entrusted property, receiving stolen property, and access device fraud. Her attorney, Phil DiLucente, stated that they are working to resolve the matter quickly. O’Brien is scheduled to appear in court on April 23.
The Fox Chapel Area Baseball Softball Association expressed their cooperation with law enforcement in the investigation and stated that they are following the legal process. The organization handles around 750 kids across nearly 30 teams and is committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of their programs.
