Pennsylvania woman Anjela Borisova Urumova, who wrongfully accused stranger of rape and kidnapping, sentenced to jail

Anjela Borisova Urumova, a 20-year-old woman from Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 45 days to 23 months in Bucks County Correctional Facility for fabricating kidnapping and rape allegations against a stranger she targeted because she thought he was “creepy.” The sentencing was handed down by Judge Stephen A. Corr, and Urumova was also placed on one year of probation, ordered to have no contact with the victim, pay him $3,600 in restitution, and undergo a mental health evaluation.
Earlier this year, Urumova pleaded guilty to seven misdemeanor counts, including tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and false reports, which could have resulted in a 17-year prison sentence. Her lies led to an innocent man, Daniel Pierson, being wrongly jailed for 31 days until she confessed to making up the allegations.
District Attorney Jennifer Schorn emphasized the impact of false reports like Urumova’s, stating that they not only affect the victim and their family but also erode the community’s confidence in the justice system and could hinder the prosecution of legitimate crimes of sexual violence.
Pierson, accompanied by his wife in court, chose not to make a statement during the sentencing, as the ordeal had been too emotional for him and his family. Urumova’s false claims involved an alleged attack outside a supermarket, where she accused Pierson of assaulting her before eventually admitting to fabricating the story.
The Middletown Township Police Department conducted a thorough investigation, reviewing surveillance footage and analyzing Urumova’s cellphone data, which revealed inconsistencies and contradictions in her account of the incident. She was charged on May 20, 2024, and held on $30,000 bail.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Kristin M. McElroy commended the detectives for their diligent work in proving Pierson’s innocence and addressing Urumova’s false accusations. McElroy condemned Urumova’s actions, highlighting the severity of falsely accusing someone of such a heinous crime and the impact it had on an innocent man.
Despite the resolution of the case, McElroy acknowledged that no amount of investigative work could erase the fact that Pierson spent 31 days incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. The sentencing of Urumova serves as a reminder of the consequences of spreading false information and the importance of upholding the integrity of the justice system.
