LIMA, Peru — Renowned Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa, a Nobel literature laureate and an icon of Latin American literature, has passed away at the age of 89, as confirmed by his son on Sunday.
In a heartfelt statement, his children Álvaro, Gonzalo, and Morgana announced, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our father, Mario Vargas Llosa, in Lima today. He departed peacefully, surrounded by his family.”
The family further stated that his remains will be cremated privately, with no public ceremony planned.
Reflecting on his legacy, they shared, “Although his absence will be deeply felt by his loved ones, friends, and readers worldwide, we take solace in the knowledge that he lived a rich, fulfilling life and leaves behind a timeless body of work.”
Mario Vargas Llosa was the acclaimed author of literary masterpieces such as “The Time of the Hero” (La Ciudad y los Perros) and “Feast of the Goat.”
A prolific writer and recipient of numerous awards, Vargas Llosa was honored with the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010 after years of being considered a top contender.
