Police officer found guilty

The former police officer in Texas who killed 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson in her home in 2019 has been found guilty of manslaughter.
The jury found ex-Fort Worth officer Aaron Dean guilty after deliberating for 13 hours, according to WFAA. After five days of testimony at trial, the verdict was made. Tarrant County jail transported Dean. He could be sent to prison for up to 20 years.
When the verdict was delivered, members of the Jefferson family were present.

We’re glad that the verdict was guilty. Cephus said
“That’s progress,” said Rev. Cephus. After hearing the verdict, Crystal Bates, a minister and activist in Texas, said. There’s so much work to be done, but it can wait. How he is sentenced will send a message not only to him but to other law enforcement not to be so trigger-happy when they see somebody of color.
Dean’s attorneys claimed the former officer fired in self-defense, but prosecutors stipulated that there was no evidence that Dean saw a gun in Jefferson’s hand before he fired his weapon through a bedroom window, as reported by CNN.
At trial, Jefferson’s 11-year-old nephew who was present in the home during the incident testified.
Jefferson’s family sued the city of Fort Worth and Dean for the wrongful death that took place at her home on October 11, 2019, based on a report by Courthouse News Service. The lawsuit is seeking damages that will compensate the plaintiff for their losses, as well as damages that will punish the defendant.
The incident took place when Jefferson was playing video games with her nephew. She noticed Jefferson’s front door was open and called the police. She was concerned that something had happened to her.
Jerome Eschor, Arita Eschor, and Venitta Body, who are relatives of Jefferson, claimed that Dean, who is white, failed to state that he was a police officer and went straight into Jefferson’s backyard when he could have gone to the front door when he responded to the 911 call from her neighbor. Jefferson’s family is suing for damages due to the excessive force, assault, battery, and supervisory liability.
“The 17-page complaint reads that Dean, immediately and within seconds of seeing the resident inside of her home, shot her through a window of the home.” “The defendant, Dean, caused Atatiana to feel fear and uncertainty when he prowled around her backyard. Dean also failed to render medical aid to Atatiana.”
