Quick-thinking artist saves life’s work from a fiery fate

An artist in Dunedin took quick action to save her life’s work and a historic building from potential disaster. Michelle Annand, a painter, was working in her studio in the Manchester Unity Chambers building when she detected a burning smell. Despite not seeing any flames, she immediately called Fire and Emergency NZ.

Firefighters discovered an overheated internal light and were able to prevent any damage. Thanks to Annand’s prompt response, her decades worth of art collection and personal belongings were spared.

The 19th-century Manchester Unity Building, originally constructed in 1883 and later renovated in 1933, was at risk of being engulfed in flames. Annand’s quick thinking and the rapid response from the fire department saved the day.

Reflecting on the incident, Annand expressed relief at salvaging her precious artwork. She emphasized the importance of being proactive in such situations, especially in old buildings like the Manchester Unity Chambers.

The artist’s vigilance and the efficient intervention of the firefighters averted a potential catastrophe, highlighting the significance of fire safety measures in preserving both artistic legacies and historical landmarks.
