REAL ID ’emergency’ appointments added in NJ after airline reminders

The deadline for the REAL ID requirement is fast approaching on May 7, and Americans must have the new form of identification in order to fly domestically. This has prompted a surge in demand for REAL IDs, causing some DMVs across the country to struggle to keep up with appointments and services.
In New Jersey, the Department of Motor Vehicles (NJDMV) website recently showed no available appointments for REAL ID services on various days, indicating the high demand for the new identification. To address this issue, the state of New Jersey has launched a “REAL ID Emergency Issuance Program” starting on Thursday. This program is designed for qualified customers who need to board a domestic flight within 14 days for urgent reasons and do not have an acceptable form of identification.
The emergency issuance program will continue beyond the May 7 deadline and will be offered to a limited number of customers who meet certain criteria. Customers who use this service will need to pay an $80 fee for expedited shipping services to receive their REAL ID in time for their flight.
DMVs nationwide are working to meet the increased demand for REAL IDs by implementing Saturday events and extended appointment hours during the week. Airlines and airports have also been reminding travelers to ensure they have the necessary identification for their upcoming flights.
As the deadline approaches, TSA and airlines are reinforcing the importance of having a REAL ID-compliant identification. Travelers are encouraged to check their ID now and make sure they have the necessary documentation to avoid delays at airport security checkpoints. Airlines like Delta are urging customers to arrive at the airport with current and valid documentation to avoid any issues.
TSA New England has confirmed that they will be ready to enforce the REAL ID requirement on May 7 and that there will be no extension to the deadline. It is crucial for travelers to plan ahead and ensure they have the proper identification to comply with the new regulations.
