Sam’s Club reveals plan to eliminate checkout lanes completely with major change

Sam’s Club Embraces AI for Grocery Shopping Experience
Sam’s Club, the Walmart-owned membership warehouse, is revolutionizing its grocery payment system by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI).
The retail giant is phasing out traditional checkouts in all 600 stores to introduce a friction-free shopping experience. Customers will be able to scan goods on the go using a mobile app and have an AI scanner verify the items as they exit, eliminating the need for receipt checks at the door.
The innovative system, called “Scan & Go,” was initially launched in April 2024, allowing members to scan products using the Sam’s Club mobile app.
The recent announcement introduces the AI-powered checkout, “Just Walk/Just Go exit,” which will replace traditional checkouts. This transformation was unveiled by Sam’s Club President and CEO Chris Nicholas at the company’s 2025 Investment Community Meeting.
Nicholas stated, “This is one of the fastest, most scalable transformations in retail today. We’re investing strategically in our stores, our employees, and the member experience to become the world’s best club retailer.”
The new store in Grapevine, Texas, has already implemented the “Just Walk/Just Go” system, setting the standard for future club stores. The store is designed to enhance shopping speed, efficiency, and enjoyment.
Additionally, the Grapevine store incorporates AI technologies to improve the work environment for employees, with features like a vertical tire carousel, automated forklifts, and a pizza robot in the café.
Sam’s Club aims to blend human-centered design and technology to offer a glimpse into the future of retail, creating a space that prioritizes convenience and discovery.
While Walmart explores AI technologies, Costco, Sam’s Club’s main competitor, remains committed to traditional checkout lanes.
The company emphasizes the importance of its 100,000 associates, highlighting their role in driving momentum and enhancing the member experience.
By utilizing AI tools to streamline tasks, Sam’s Club has improved operational efficiency and associate engagement. The company has also made investments in wages and career progression opportunities.
The adoption of new technology allows Sam’s Club to focus on enhancing the member experience through meaningful interactions with associates, fostering loyalty and satisfaction.
Nicholas concluded, “We’re building a culture that supports our associates as much as our members because that’s how we win.”
