Segway recalls 220,000 scooters after mechanical glitch injures 20

Segway has issued a recall for approximately 220,000 Segway scooters sold across the United States due to a potential safety hazard. The folding mechanism of the scooters can fail while in use, posing a risk of falls that have resulted in injuries to 20 individuals, including broken bones, bruises, and lacerations. The affected models include the Segway Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Segway has received 68 reports of folding mechanism failures, leading to the injuries mentioned above. These scooters were manufactured in China and Malaysia and were sold online at Amazon.com and Segway.com, as well as at retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Club, Target, and Walmart. The scooters were available for purchase between January 2020 and February 2025, with prices ranging from $600 to $1,000.
The Max G30LP KickScooter is identified by its gray color with yellow accents, while the Max G30P model is black with yellow accents. The brand name “ninebot” is prominently displayed on the foot platform and the top of the handlebars. Consumers who own these recalled scooters are advised to stop using them immediately and contact Segway for further instructions. Segway is offering a free maintenance kit that includes tools and instructions for checking and tightening the folding mechanism.

This is not the first time Segway has issued a product recall. In previous instances, the company recalled Segway Ninebot P100 KickScooters and Ninebot Kids bike helmets due to safety concerns. It is important for consumers to stay informed about product recalls and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
Segway, a company that has changed ownership multiple times, has faced challenges in the past related to product safety. It is crucial for companies to prioritize consumer safety and take proactive measures to address any potential risks associated with their products. By following the instructions provided by Segway and taking appropriate action, consumers can help prevent accidents and injuries related to the recalled scooters.
