Sex worker killed customer who wanted refund after learning she was trans

A recent incident in San Francisco has left the community shocked after a transgender sex worker, Leniyah Butler, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the shooting of her customer, Hamza Walupupu. The unfortunate event took place in November 2023 in the Tenderloin District, where Walupupu picked up Butler, also known as Leion Butler, for services.

The pair drove to Crissy Field, a popular tourist spot overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, where the shocking revelation was made. After performing a sex act, Butler disclosed her transgender identity to Walupupu, leading to a heated argument when he demanded a refund. The situation escalated quickly, with Butler pulling out a gun from her purse and fatally shooting Walupupu in the eye.

Following the tragic incident, Butler attempted to cover up the crime by stealing Walupupu’s car, disposing of his belongings, and getting rid of the murder weapon. Despite her efforts, FBI agents located Butler at her San Francisco residence a week later. She tried to escape but was apprehended and is now being held in custody awaiting sentencing on June 27, facing a maximum of 15 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.

While Butler was acquitted of second-degree murder, the verdict has brought some closure to the victim’s family. Acting United States Attorney Patrick D. Robbins expressed condolences to Walupupu’s family and hoped that the verdict would provide some justice for their loss.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the complexities and dangers that sex workers, especially transgender individuals, face in their line of work. It also highlights the importance of addressing issues of violence and discrimination against marginalized communities. The sentencing of Leniyah Butler will hopefully bring some form of accountability and closure to all those affected by this heartbreaking event.
