Teen Arrested for Shooting Incident at West Side Convenience Store
A 19-year-old man was shot inside a West Side convenience store and is currently in critical condition. Despite the victim not cooperating with the investigation, Chicago police detectives were able to identify the shooter and charges have been filed.
The alleged gunman, identified as 16-year-old Javeon Gathright, was caught on surveillance cameras at TNL convenience store on West Madison. The footage showed Gathright and five others entering the store on the evening of March 8.
According to Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Rusch, the group approached the victim at the checkout counter after pulling masks over their faces. Gathright then pulled out a gun from a companion’s pocket and shot the victim multiple times, leaving him with critical injuries.
Despite the victim’s lack of cooperation, detectives were able to identify Gathright with the help of a Berwyn police officer who recognized him from the surveillance footage. Gathright, who has no prior juvenile record, now faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery by discharging a firearm in adult court.
