Shootout between car burglars, concealed carry holder ends with good guy shot, bad guys on the loose

A dramatic incident unfolded in South Shore on Sunday morning when a concealed carry holder engaged in a shootout with burglars attempting to break into his SUV. According to police reports, the 38-year-old CCL holder noticed three individuals breaking into his Jeep Cherokee in the 6900 block of South Crandon just before 5 a.m. Instead of staying passive, he decided to confront the perpetrators.

Unfortunately, the burglars were armed as well, and a gunfight ensued between them and the concealed carry holder. A total of 16 shell casings were found at the scene, indicating the intensity of the exchange of gunfire. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his back and buttocks and was subsequently transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in stable condition.

The suspects, described only as three males dressed in all black attire and wearing ski masks, managed to flee the scene in a dark sedan, believed to be a black Mazda3. Their escape route led them north on Crandon, evading capture by law enforcement.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by individuals who choose to confront criminals in the act. While the concealed carry holder displayed bravery in his actions, the outcome could have been far more tragic. It is essential for individuals to prioritize their safety and well-being above confronting perpetrators in such situations.
