On Tuesday, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that Tesla has pledged to construct a factory in the industrial city of Monterrey, located in the northern region of the country.
Elon Musk and López Obrador both confirmed, in phone calls on Friday and Monday, that the promise had been made.
Previously, López Obrador had refused to install the plant in Nuevo Leon – the arid northern state with its capital Monterrey – due to the fear that it would consume too much water, given the already existing water scarcity in the region.
López Obrador stated that all the water used in the production of electric vehicles will be recycled water.
Without specifying the size of the investment or what the plant would produce, López Obrador noted that the company planned to release more details on Wednesday.
