The Joe Show Hot Topic: Balancing New Relationships and Family Ties: A Mother’s Dilemma About Prison Visits
Joe Show, here’s the deal: I’m 39 and my ex-boyfriend, the dad of my 17-year-old son, is 40 and locked up for a solid 65 years. I was visiting him every two weeks, but that’s done now. I’m in a new serious relationship and have decided it’s time to move on. He’s never getting out, and he’s not the type to tell me to live my life.
He expects me to visit him forever. But my son, who’s got his license now and can drive, wants me to keep going with him to visit his dad. I said no, but he’s insisting that if I don’t go, neither will he. Now, the ex’s family is all riled up, accusing me of keeping my son from his father and saying I should still tag along. So, Joe, what’s your take? Am I wrong for putting my foot down? Should I cave and go with my son, or stick to my decision?
