Dear Joe,

Four years ago, I met the woman who would become my wife. We dated for a year and then got married. Our marriage has been mostly smooth, with just a few minor disagreements. We both deeply care for each other and have been doing well together.

However, last week, we faced a significant challenge. My wife’s 32-year-old son, who has a job but recently had his hours reduced, found himself in financial trouble. Unable to afford his apartment, he expressed a desire to move in with us. He initially approached his mother, who then directed him to me, as she had moved into my home when we married.

When he asked me, I declined his request. This decision was based on my belief that his presence would disrupt the peace in our home. He reacted strongly, arguing that since his mother also lives here, it should be her decision as well. After he left, my wife confronted me, insisting that as her only son, he deserved a chance and that our marriage made it her home too.

This disagreement escalated, and my wife chose to leave after I stood firm on my decision. Her son, an active dater with many female friends, has even brought several of them to our home, which makes me question why he cannot stay with one of them instead.

Now, I am torn. My mother believes I should have given him a chance and not risk my marriage over this issue. However, my best friend advises me to maintain my stance and not let the adult son move in due to the potential problems he may bring.

Joe, I am at a crossroads. Did I make the right decision in refusing her son and allowing her to leave? Or should I have compromised and given him a chance? I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on this matter.
