Tom Brady to Miami?
Plenty of teams are expected to pursue Tom Brady when he becomes a free agent for the second time in his career during the 2023 NFL off season.
Although Brady will turn 46 before the 2023 season begins, he is still playing at a high enough level for numerous teams across the NFL to consider him an upgrade at quarterback.
That could include. A team that pursued Brady when he was first available during the 2020 off season was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Dolphins were actually punished because they were connected to Brady in 2020. While he was still technically under contract with the Patriots, the NFL found evidence that Miami had tampered with Brady. Stephen Ross, the owner, reportedly hosted Brady on his yacht in Florida before free agency had officially begun.
This incident resulted in Miami losing its first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. It doesn’t appear that this will stop them from chasing Brady during the offseason to help prop open their Super Bowl contention window.
One big question the Dolphins would face if they pursued Brady would be… What will they do with Tua Tagovailoa?
Under coach Mike McDaniel, Tagovailoa, 24, is coming off the best season of his young career. He completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 13 starts. His record was 8-5. He also led the NFL in yards per pass attempt (8.9), as well as passer rating (105.5).
Tagovailoa’s main issue is that he hasn’t been healthy enough throughout his NFL career. Because of injuries, he is going to miss at least four games in the regular season and one in the playoffs; he has also suffered two known concussions in 2022 and suffered ataxia on the field at least once.
It may make sense for Miami to replace Tagovailoa if the Dolphins aren’t confident that he can stay healthy. A curious decision would be to move on from a young, talented quarterback who made immense strides under McDaniel for a soon-to-be 46-year-old.
Tagovailoa is cheap enough to serve as Brady’s backup, according to Florio’s speculation. Although that may be tough to justify, the team could probably get a solid trade package in return for its current quarterback.
It’s more likely that the Dolphins would have to make a decision. Who is the better quarterback, Brady or Tagovailoa?
Although it’s unclear what the Dolphins will do, they will have competition for Brady’s services. More teams could emerge from the woodwork as fits for him, even though he has already been tied to the likes of the Raiders, Titans and 49ers.
It looks like it will be another interesting off season for Brady as he tries to build — or join — another Super Bowl contender.
