Trump Campaign Claims Iranian Hack Amid Vice Presidential Selection
The campaign of former President Donald Trump has claimed it was hacked by an Iranian group, according to a statement released by the campaign. The alleged hack, which has yet to be independently verified by NBC News, was first reported by Politico. The outlet stated it had received emails from an anonymous source sharing internal Trump campaign documents.
Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, confirmed the incident occurred in June, coinciding with Trump’s selection of a Vice Presidential nominee. Cheung referenced a recent report from Microsoft, which highlighted that an Iranian group linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) conducted a spear-phishing attack targeting a high-ranking official in a U.S. presidential campaign during that time.
The reported hack raises concerns about foreign interference and cybersecurity in the upcoming election cycle.
