US strikes kill 8 in Yemen’s capital, Houthi rebels say

The recent U.S. airstrikes in Yemen have caused significant casualties, with at least eight people reported dead in overnight attacks on the capital, according to the Houthi rebels. The American military has carried out over 800 individual strikes in their monthlong campaign, targeting Houthi fighters and leaders associated with their missile and drone program.

The U.S. military, under “Operation Roughrider,” has emphasized its commitment to continue the airstrikes despite international concerns. The primary objective of these strikes is to address Iran’s support for the Houthi rebels and to restore freedom of navigation in the region.

The Houthi rebels have been targeted due to their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and on Israel. As the last militant group in Iran’s “Axis of Resistance” capable of regularly attacking Israel, the Houthis have become a focal point in the ongoing conflict.

While the exact toll of the airstrikes remains unclear, reports indicate that high-ranking Houthi officials have been killed in the attacks. The Houthis have strict control over access to targeted areas, making it challenging to obtain accurate information about the casualties.

Despite the lack of specific details about the airstrikes, the U.S. Central Command has defended its operational approach, citing the need to maintain operational security. However, concerns have been raised about civilian casualties resulting from the intense campaign.

The airstrikes are being conducted from two aircraft carriers in the region, the USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea and the USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian Sea. The deadliest-known attack occurred on April 18 at the Ras Isa fuel port, resulting in numerous casualties and disrupting the Houthi’s operations and revenue streams.

In response to the escalating conflict, the Houthi rebels have taken measures to control the flow of information, including issuing warnings about possessing Starlink satellite internet receivers. These devices have played a crucial role in communication efforts in conflict zones like Ukraine and Iran.

Overall, the situation in Yemen remains volatile, with ongoing airstrikes and military operations contributing to a humanitarian crisis in the region. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely as efforts to de-escalate the conflict are explored.
