‘Very real threat’: Warning as Gisborne gang tensions escalate

Authorities in Gisborne are facing a surge in tensions between rival gangs, with police warning of a “very real threat” to both those involved and innocent bystanders.
A “significant” operation has been launched, with a ‘Gang Conflict Warrant’ issued under the Criminal Activity Intervention Legislation Act. This grants police special powers to search vehicles and individuals suspected of gang affiliation, as well as to confiscate firearms, weapons, and vehicles.
Tairāwhiti Area Commander Inspector Danny Kirk revealed that the move comes after a series of eight incidents involving assaults and firearms between March 16 and 23.
“Despite efforts by police and gang leaders to de-escalate tensions, the increasing conflict among rival gang members has necessitated the implementation of additional powers,” Kirk stated.
He added that law enforcement officers from across the district are backing the operation, which will see a heightened police presence in Gisborne and surrounding areas.
While emphasizing ongoing collaboration with gang leadership, Kirk emphasized that all gang members are under scrutiny.
“Additional police patrols will be active in communities throughout Tairāwhiti, conducting vehicle stops, executing searches, and following up on recent concerning incidents,” he said.
Since the enactment of new gang legislation in November, police have been empowered to seize gang insignia and have been granted expanded authority to disrupt gang activities.
Members of the public in Tairawhiti are urged to assist law enforcement by reporting any illegal or suspicious behavior.
