What to know about getting a REAL ID

As the deadline for REAL ID compliance approaches, travelers in the United States are gearing up to ensure they have the necessary identification to pass through security checkpoints at airports. Beginning on May 7, individuals will need to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another form of acceptable identification to TSA agents. Failure to do so could result in delays, additional screening, or even being denied access to their flight.

The roll-out of the REAL ID program has caused confusion among travelers, with many unsure of their states’ requirements and struggling to secure appointments at overwhelmed DMVs. According to federal documents, only 56% of driver’s licenses and IDs in circulation across the country currently comply with REAL ID standards. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that only 61.2% will be compliant by the upcoming deadline.

To help accommodate the rush for REAL ID licenses, DMVs nationwide are taking steps to streamline the process. Some states, like New York and California, are extending office hours and offering additional appointment slots. In Illinois, a “Real ID Supercenter” has been established to assist walk-in applicants.

Despite the high demand for REAL IDs, travelers are advised to be patient and persistent in securing appointments. AAA branches may also offer REAL ID services, but availability varies by location and may require an additional fee. It’s important for applicants to come prepared with the necessary documentation, as outlined on the Department of Homeland Security website.

For those unable to obtain a REAL ID in time, a valid passport remains a compliant form of identification for air travel. However, TSA warns that individuals without REAL ID may experience delays and additional screening at security checkpoints.

As the deadline looms, travelers are encouraged to stay informed, plan ahead, and be proactive in obtaining their REAL ID-compliant identification to ensure a smooth travel experience.
