Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho Respond to Donald Trump’s ‘Sorority Party’ Remarks
Two prominent Black sororities, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho, have issued statements in response to recent comments made by former President Donald Trump. Trump referred to a political gathering as a “sorority party,” a remark that sparked backlash for its dismissive tone towards the importance of Black sororities and their contributions to society.
Zeta Phi Beta, a sorority founded in 1920 with a long history of community service and advocacy, responded swiftly. In a public statement, the organization expressed disappointment in Trump’s comment, calling it “demeaning and disrespectful.” They emphasized the vital role sororities, particularly those rooted in the Black community, play in empowering women and supporting social justice initiatives. “We are far more than a ‘party,’” the statement read. “Zeta Phi Beta has been at the forefront of civic engagement and educational support for over a century.”
Similarly, Sigma Gamma Rho, another historic Black sorority established in 1922, also released a response, condemning Trump’s trivialization of their work. Sigma Gamma Rho highlighted the leadership, scholarship, and community outreach that sororities provide, particularly in underserved communities. “Our sisterhood is built on service, scholarship, and solidarity, not superficial labels,” the organization stated.
Both sororities expressed concern that Trump’s remarks ignored the significance of Black Greek-letter organizations, which have long been a cornerstone of Black excellence, leadership, and activism in America. The backlash underscores a broader sensitivity about the need to respect institutions that play a crucial role in Black culture and history.
